Abstract:
Lots of little decisions can have a greater impact than a few big ones.

From portfolio strategies to project stage gates, big decisions have big impacts…but so do the thousands of choices that stem from those big decisions, often made by an individual or within a team. The question is: how does an organization ensure all those decisions to achieve Decision Quality (DQ) with limited time, budget, and expertise?

Assigning a decision professional to each decision is infeasible. So what’s the usual answer? Train people to do it themselves. The usual concern? Time, both to learn and to follow the approach. Using an analogy, it’s important to note that this concern is focused on the vehicle, rather than the destination (DQ).

The traditional vehicle is the Dialogue Decision Process (DDP). Some companies even have their own derivation of the DDP, fit to their organizational structure and culture. Other companies opt for the assess-then-tailor approach, where a decision professional evaluates a team’s current standing relative to the DQ elements and selects tools and techniques to improve the elements that are low. These approaches work well in an organizational context. However, the vast majority of the decisions made in a company are made by individuals or teams without a decision professional in sight.
